If at 0-6 years old we shape a child’s hands,
then at 6-12 years old, Montessori Education shapes their universe.
The teaching scope of a Montessori Elementary School is very large, covering all aspects of the world and the universal connection between them.
☘☘ Dr. Montessori used the term “cosmic education” to describe this.
She used the “Five Great Lessons” to created a set of knowledge systems for children. They are The Beginning of the Universe and Earth, Life Comes to Earth, Human Come to Earth, How Writing Began and How Numbers Began.
Her goal is to give children a key to unlocking knowledge. She wants to give them a cosmic map of knowledge, a perspective that everything in the universe is connected, a core approach to exploring the rules of everything, teamwork, and a humble and grateful heart.
🍃 The Beginning of the Universe and Earth
Children are taught the great story of the birth of the universe: the Big Bang theory. All scientific disciplines are covered, including physics, chemistry, geography etc. A large number of scientific experiments and diagrams help children gain sensory perception, thus giving them a better understanding of scientific principles.
🌱 Life Comes to Earth
They are then presented with the great story of the birth of life, bringing them back to ancient times. Through teaching about how life came to Earth for the first time, students are introduced to biological science. From plants to animals, from basic concepts to taxonomy, children can explore and learn about any creature they are interested in.
👫 Human Come to Earth
The great story of human birth is also taught to the children, highlighting the three qualities that make us extraordinary: our hands, our brain, and love.
The story of the birth of mankind opens up another perspective for children—historical research, in which all cosmic history and human history are included.
👄 How Writing Began
Language is the most critical part of human evolution. From the murals of ancient times to the ancient Greeks and ancient Romans, the great story of the birth of the language will teach children to be grateful to those who contributed to mankind. They are then brought into the world of language.
🔢 How Numbers Began
Similar to language, numbers are also invented to meet the basic needs of human beings. Along with the great story of the birth of numbers, students are exposed to mathematics and geometry. This includes the four basic operations, simple algebraic formulas and basic geometry.
☁🔢👄👫🌲 The “Five Great Lessons” is a framework for cosmic education, opening up the door to knowledge for children and building a whole system of learning for them.
These lessons open doors for students to take a peek into the connections and logic behind the world they live in.
Activities based on individual learning ability for 6-12 year olds
· Freedom within limits learning environment
Many parents are keen to allow their children to grow in an environment that is more humane and more suitable for the development of children aged 6-12, rather than being limited to a table and a chair.
Scientific research shows that:
For a 6-12 year old child who is eager to socialize, a table and a chair will limit the development of their social needs. At the same time, a teacher’s method of teaching can also limit the child’s freedom to explore and self-learn.
Therefore, in a Montessori elementary school, children learn by a combination of independent investigation and group learning.
Children can choose to complete a research on a topic in the form of a written report. It is also possible for several students to form a study group. This exercise improves a child’s teamwork ability, problem solving ability, reading and writing ability, and the ability to face adversities.
· The role of the teacher is to guide rather than teach
The role of a Montessori teacher is not a highly-educated instructor, but instead they act as a guide. Teachers accompany children on their path of exploration, guiding students into deeper enquiries by asking questions.
An experienced Montessori teacher once said: “As a teacher, you don’t need to know all the answers, but you have to ask the questions that inspire students to create their own learning pathway.”
This is undoubtedly a more suitable learning method that nurtures the physical and mental development of children aged 6-12.
· A large number of outdoor activities and social skills
Children aged 6-12 are energetic. They love nature, are keen on adventure and are eager to explore the world. To meet their needs, the schools organises a field trip at least once every month. A botanical garden is also built on the campus for students to explore nature and participate in social activities.
Activities outside the classroom exercise the child’s independent thought and action, as well as test their willpower. It is important to continuously cultivated their intellectual independence, of moral sense, and of social organization
· Mixed age teaching
Mixed-age teaching has always been a major feature of Montessori teaching methods, because this learning method can not only meet the social needs of children, but also cultivate children’s sense of responsibility, empathy and self-confidence.
· 3 hours of uninterrupted work time to exercise focus
To obtain good concentration and focus, children need constantly practice it. The school assigns 3 hours of hands-on work and learning to students every morning. They may continuously work for 3 hours not because they are not finished, but the goal is to end the work at hand because time is up.
